Memorial Elevated Basket Installed At Akron
The Kim Horst Memorial has been installed on Akron Hole 23 Long.
For those who don’t know, the memorial was made in honor of Kim Horst. The reason I was inspired to take on such a project was because of the commitment I watched Kim have to her son Dylan Horst over the years. It was the first example of a disc golf parent actively supporting their child in disc golf that I got to observe. This has become more common now, but 15 years ago this was trail blazing. Most parents would have encouraged their kid to go play soccer instead of throwing discs in the woods with a bunch of older hippies, but not Kim. Now look at him. One of the best players in the state off competing in a PDGA major this weekend.
We want this memorial to be a place for others to remember their loved ones from disc golf as well. We will be lining the base of it with brass plaques. If you have someone you would like added to it, you can reach out to me to discuss.
Next time you’re playing hole 23 at Akron feel free to take a moment to pay some respect to those no longer with us. Many of you have expressed interest in contributing financially toward the plaques/project. If you would like to contribute you can send donations through PayPal to: Lancasterdiscgolf@outlook.com. Please put Akron memorial in the notes. Any extra money will go towards future plaques that will be added on an annual basis.
A huge thank you to Chad Martin at Discorganized for making the wood components and helping to install it. Also to Barbara Dyson for painting the original wolf disc that raised the money and the art work on the memorial itself. My dad (also Jerry) for assisting me with staining and sealing it. Lastly, all the other people who volunteered with the installation: Wes Moyer, Pete Wolf, Dylan Wolf, Dylan Horst, and Alex Shaver.
